Why I Tried Nutrisense (and What I Learned)

I’ve been trying it out for the past week and a half. nutrisense I was then fitted with a CGM to monitor my blood sugar levels. I’ll share a summary of my experience here! In today’s post I would like to share a summary of my experience using this. nutrisense. I’ve been curious about this company for a while, especially since I did the Inside Tracker blood test earlier this year. My fasting blood sugar levels were a little high, so I was worried it was a more serious problem. I then contacted the company and they offered to try it out for a month and see what I liked about it, which I was very happy about.

I received the product and was so nervous to put it on (hello, I have an extreme fear of needles). mia She explained the whole process to me and said she would also attach her stuff at the same time. I really wanted the data, so I took a deep breath and went to get it. I’m really glad I did because it was invaluable to see how my body reacted to different foods.

(I’m laughing, but I’m panicking. As it turns out, connecting the CGM was nothing like I had imagined. It was painless and very easy.)

What is NutriSense and how does it work?

nutrisense is a program that provides expert guidance in conjunction with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). CGM tracks blood sugar levels at 15 minute intervals throughout the day, so you can see how your blood sugar levels change. Sleep patterns, diet, exercise, stress, and nutrition affect blood sugar levels. Continuously elevated blood sugar levels can cause inflammation and damage within the body, so it’s helpful to look at how your body responds to the factors listed above, especially how it recovers. for example, If your blood sugar spikes after a high-carbohydrate or sugary meal, will it stay elevated or will it recover within two hours? How high are the spikes? ?

When you sign up for Nutrisense, you will receive a continuous blood glucose monitor and details on how to install it. (You can watch me do this here!) Place the CGM and protective patch on the back of your arm, download the app, scan your CGM and start tracking your data. It usually takes about an hour after you add it for your phone to recognize it and start scanning. (Simply click “Scan” in the app and hold your phone over the CGM where the camera is located.)

Within the Nutrisense app, you’ll first be paired with a registered dietitian who can help you interpret data in real-time, make recommendations, provide feedback, and run experiments.

How much does NutriSense cost?

The service starts at $350 per month and decreases over time. ($199 per month with a 12-month agreement.)

The CGM is nutrisense Freestyle Libre is used and is valid for 14 days. (The app will notify you when your sensor is about to expire.) You don’t need a prescription to use Nutrisense.

What kind of data do you receive and how do you interpret that data?

Your blood sugar levels are tracked 24/7, allowing you to see how high they rise and how long it takes for them to stabilize. It’s interesting to observe overnight spikes and how different patterns and lifestyle changes affect blood sugar levels.

I received this from my registered dietitian. He messaged me frequently and was always available to answer questions: (This was after I had a higher than expected spike after drinking a smoothie)

To provide more background, I would like to explain what I look at when assessing glucose response. Check out the October 11th breakfast as an example (chocolate, smoothie, almond milk).

Peak (^ on the meal card). First, check your peak blood sugar levels and aim to avoid repeated exposures above 140. My peak blood sugar level was 114, well below my threshold and a normal peak.

Exposure (squiggly line on meal card). Next, the area under the curve (AUC) must also be small. Therefore, if your blood sugar rises rapidly to 150 but returns to premeal blood sugar within an hour after a meal, the area under the curve will be smaller. But if your blood sugar rises slowly to 130 and stays there for 4 hours, the area under the curve is much larger. curve. It is desirable for blood sugar levels to return to pre-meal levels within 2 to 3 hours after a meal. You can monitor the AUC by evaluating his AUC value of the meal card and checking the standard deviation in the analysis. Your AUC for him was 42.9. Optimally, I’d say you’re looking for less than 30, but less than 50 is still okay.

Stability (triangle on meal card). You also want to avoid large “changes” in glucose. So it’s possible that your post-meal value was only 130 (which is a good thing!), but your pre-meal value was 70, which is a pretty big change. You can monitor this by evaluating the delta value, as we always strive to keep the delta value below 30. Delta was 33, which is great!!

Recovery (2 hour score on meal card). Finally, blood sugar levels should return to premeal levels within 2 to 3 hours after a meal. Your response was 23. This means that at 2 hours, you were 23 points away from your baseline value.

What I learned using Nutrisense CGM

Buffering agent that prevents blood sugar levels from rising rapidly

If you’re eating a particularly high-carbohydrate meal, take a walk before or after your meal, consume some protein first, and adjust your carbohydrate intake and meal timing. Insulin sensitivity improves during the day and tapers off toward the evening, so you may be able to tolerate foods better if you take them in the afternoon rather than late at night. This is exactly the case with my wines. Drinking wine late in the afternoon will not affect your sleep.

Whole food based carbohydrates don’t affect me much

Especially when combined with protein. (Berries, apples, bananas, and oranges didn’t cause spikes when eaten alone.) So did oatmeal, paleo pancakes, siete tortillas, and starchy vegetables. Refined carbohydrates, on the other hand, caused a spike. I went to a party at a friend’s house, and I ate more sweets and drank more refined carbohydrates (plus champagne) than usual, which caused my blood sugar to rise all night and the next day. It was interesting to see how one meal affected insulin sensitivity the next day.

Stress levels have a huge impact on insulin response

I noticed that my stressful days were at their peak.

However, they quickly decline, leading to improved insulin response throughout the day.

Wine spikes blood sugar levels, but tequila doesn’t.

That’s an important lesson (lol). She drank one glass and both were fine, but after two glasses her level increased the next day. This experiment proved to me the fact that consuming large amounts of alcohol doesn’t work, and served as a good reminder to keep drinking to a minimum. (Now I drink one or two drinks a week.

Also, my body loves tacos, beans, and rice.

I had Mexican food with my family on a Wednesday night as usual, but there was no big spike.

peace of mind

A large proportion of our population does not have high metabolic flexibility, which can affect how they deal with stress and injury, and how they recover from illness. I was worried that my previous blood test showed that my fasting blood sugar level was high, but this test confirmed that this is not the case for me (the blood test showed an abnormal value). ), which was a good indicator of how my metabolic health and habits affect my body. Blood glucose level. That was my main concern going into this, but it was a welcome sigh of relief.

I like using this app and found it to be fairly easy to understand, even for beginners.

Cons:

The first time I put them on, I felt a little weird eating them.

It’s like I was scared to eat something that would spike my symptoms and eventually had to tell myself to get over it and eat normally after a few days. If you eat only protein and vegetables for 14 days, the data is useless. I prepared everything I usually eat, like margaritas, tacos, and desserts, so you’ll get a real picture. We do not recommend using this if you have a history of eating disorders.

It was uncomfortable so I took it off a few days early.

(I think it was more the adhesive than the actual sensor.) I recognize the privilege of having a diabetic friend and being able to say, “I don’t want to wear this anymore” and take it off. We rely on CGM to survive. I would like to make a small note here about meeting you. <3 She didn't sleep well at all for 11 days while wearing it. My sleep was very light because I was unconsciously worried that I would roll over and sleep on it during the night. I also got a bit of a catheter shock when the pilot removed it. It's a small plastic tube, but it was longer than I expected lol.

Overall, this was a really valuable experience and I enjoyed accessing all the data and learning from Nutrisense RD.
