  1. melt: Melt the butter in a large pot on the stove over medium heat. Add sugar, buttermilk, vanilla, and corn syrup and stir everything together.
  2. boil: Place the mixture in a rolling bowl, remove the pot from the heat, add the baking soda and stir.
    • Note: The syrup will foam quite a bit (see the photo below to see the amount of foam; this is completely normal). So make sure the pot is large and has enough space. When adding the baking soda, you may want to hold the pot over the sink to avoid creating bubbles. You don’t want sugary mess all over your stovetop. It doesn’t get any worse than this!
  3. boil: Return the pot to the heat and whisk until everything is incorporated, about 30 seconds. Then it’s ready to serve.
