SYin recently announced new releases for the year, including a retro take on the company’s signature Pilot’s Chronograph.of 103 St Ty HD Chronograph The matte black dial features a classic three-register layout highlighted with red accents, a design inspired by the 103 C of the 1970s. Importantly, the new 103 is equipped with a hand-wound movement, marking the first time in 20 years that Sinn has released a hand-wound chronograph.

first thought

The appeal of this release lies in its elegant vintage design, especially the classic 3-register layout and 1970s details like the “roulette” register. The contrast between black and red is particularly attractive. Notably, unlike many scaled-up vintage remakes, here the retro style is expressed in roughly the same size. The new 103 is close to the original dimensions at 41 mm high and approximately 15 mm high.

Priced at $2,870 USD, the new 103 is affordable. However, Sellita’s movements can also be found in retro-inspired chronographs from micro-brands such as Farrer, at a quarter of his price. Sinn has a history with real aviation instruments, which most other brands in this price range don’t have, but the price still feels high. Singh should have made more movement and other substantial upgrades to justify the price. Nevertheless, true blue Sinn enthusiasts will appreciate this release, as Sinn doesn’t often do vintage remakes.

Hand-wound and vintage feel

103 is a pilot chronograph that has been part of the German brand’s catalog since the 1960s. As the model name suggests, this is the brand’s third chronograph model. The new 103 is essentially a remake of the 1970s model 103 C, featuring a design typical of the era, featuring a three-register black dial with blocky red accents. The vintage original featured his Valjoux 726 movement in a more compact case.

The new 103, on the other hand, is larger but maintains the same dial layout, with slightly different details and tweaks to give it a vintage hue. The original white register has been replaced by a cream-colored subdial, but the red segment marking the first 10 minutes on the minute counter remains. Red is also used for the minute track and central seconds hand.

The steel case features pump pushers and a screw-down crown with the Sinn ‘S’ logo, while the aluminum bezel is black with white numerals. One thing to note is that the crystal is made of acrylic, just like the vintage original.

However, the case is slightly larger than the original. The 103 C was just under 41mm wide and just under 14.3mm high, but the new 103 is Diameter 41mm, height 14.8mm. However, since the new model is manually wound, it is slightly thinner by 1.1mm than the standard automatic 103 St.

Inside the solid case back is the Sellita SW510 M. It is a hand-wound model of the Sellita SW500, which is itself a clone of the Valjoux 7750. Although the movement is simple, it shows durability and ease of maintenance. It has a limited power reserve of 63 hours and features a high beat frequency of 4 Hz.
