Several people who have tasted this macaroni and cheese ice cream have commented on the caramel and butterscotch-like aftertaste. I agree with that too. This is a truly unique ice cream and we enjoy it.

This flavor was new to me when a friend mentioned it a while back. And I decided to give it a try too. And when someone invites me to try something, especially when it involves ice cream making, I can’t help but try it.

It took me several times to make this ice cream to get the flavor right, but I’m happy to say that macaroni and cheese ice cream really works.

The buttery, slightly sweet flavor of the grated cheese in every box of macaroni and cheese is a very subtle and surprisingly good addition to creamy homemade ice cream.

It was so fun to share the macaroni and cheese ice cream with friends and see if anyone could guess the flavor.

And as crazy as this ice cream sounds (and honestly it is), I’m going to make it a little more crazy.I made it the other day Rin Since we were working together here, I decided on a whim to try the warm pasta with ice cream.

Well… it was good. Honestly, this combination was much better than I expected, so even after taking the silly photo, I kept coming back for just one more bite.

However, don’t stir boiled pasta into ice cream and then freeze it. Trust me when I say he chose one for his team when he tried this combination.

Macaroni and cheese ice cream served over boiled pasta? It became even more delicious. Does macaroni and cheese ice cream have real pasta noodles in it? Not my best idea, guys. The super chewy frozen pasta chunks in the ice cream were not at all pleasant.

The vanilla extract in the recipe controls the depth of flavor in this macaroni and cheese ice cream. Vanilla can and will be the predominant flavor, depending on both the amount of extract added and how long the ice cream has been stored in the freezer.

When the ice cream base is still warm from the stove, and later freshly stirred, you’ll notice a slight savory flavor at the end of each bite.

However, if you add more vanilla after the ice cream has been in the freezer for a while, the flavor changes to something more reminiscent of caramel, making the macaroni and cheese flavor harder to discern.

I made it with and without vanilla and with varying amounts of extract. I had a lot of fun trying out this recipe and seeing how I liked it best.

Kraft Mac & Cheese Ice Cream

To make this recipe you will need the following ingredients:

  • heavy cream
  • sugar
  • Boxed Macaroni & Cheese Powdered Cheese Pack
  • whole milk
  • vanilla extract

To make ice cream, pour the cream into a saucepan and add sugar and salt. Warm the mixture over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Add grated cheese and mix with a whisk.

Remove from heat and add milk and vanilla extract. Mix and chill in the refrigerator.

When ready to stir, whisk the mixture again and pour into the ice cream maker. Stir according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Transfer the finished ice cream to an airtight container and place it in the freezer until ready to eat.
