I’ve always believed that women should be able to look forward to quiet time off and recovery after giving birth. In return, we get a precious baby and the sleep deprivation that comes with it. This DIY sitz bath recipe from hers will give you at least a little bit of solace and pampering to look forward to during your postpartum recovery period.

Herbs are great postpartum and can help speed up your recovery time.I’ve used it before my healing ointment I’ve used it on both my C-section scar and small lacerations (after day 2) to speed up healing, and it’s been very effective. This sitz bath recipe infuses a relaxing bath with herbs to soothe pain and speed recovery. You can also use it in a peribottle or cooling pad for added comfort.

I used a variety of herbs here, but you don’t have to use them all. Learn what a sitz bath is and why it’s perfect for new moms.

What is a sitz bath?

Sitz comes from the German word sitzen, which means to sit. Just a little soak on your butt will provide targeted relief to your genital area. They can help relieve pain, increase blood flow to the area, and speed healing. Sitz baths are recommended for the following people:

  • hemorrhoids
  • anal fissure
  • episiotomy suture
  • Pain or injury to the vulva and perineum
  • pain in the rectum or anal area

Perfect for postpartum! Even if there were no tears during childbirth, warm water and soothing herbs can help relieve discomfort and swelling.

How to take a sitz bath (2 ways)

Drugstores sell sitz bath kits that fit into toilet bowls. These consist of a shallow basin and, in some cases, a bag that supplies warm water to the sitz basin. You can also find simple plastic sitting bath bowls without bags or accessories. These are useful because they concentrate soothing water where you need it.

If you don’t have a sitz bath bowl, you can also use it in a bathtub. However, it must be cleaned before each use. You don’t want bacteria or old soap scum on your butt, which is still healing.

I will explain step by step how to take a sitz bath.

  1. If you use a sitz bath, place a clean container under the toilet seat. Add about 1/2 amount of hot water or herbal tea and Epsom salt. Please be careful that the water temperature is not too high to avoid burns.
  2. If you use a bathtub, make sure it’s freshly cleaned and filled with a few inches of warm water. The water should cover your thighs when you sit down. Add herbal tea or Epsom salt to a shallow bathtub.
  3. Soak your butt in warm water for 10 to 20 minutes 1 to 4 times a day.
  4. Pat it dry with a clean towel or let it air dry. Do not rub the area.

What to use in a sitz bath

Now that you know what a sitz bath is and how it works, what should you put in it? There are a variety of gentle herbs that can help heal painful areas (see below for more information). You can also add a little baking soda and Epsom salt to your sitz bath to speed up the healing process.

If you have hemorrhoids, try applying a little witch hazel to your rectum after bathing. There are some things you shouldn’t put in a sitz bath.

I love essential oils, but they don’t disperse in water alone and are too harsh for my tender perineum. Scented bath salts, bubble baths, and similar products should also be avoided.

Herbs are a great option for DIY sitz baths, and you’ll find me using quite a few. You don’t need to use all of these to be effective, so just use what you have on hand.

  • comfrey leaves – This herb is a demulcent that soothes dry and irritated tissues. It also reduces swelling and bruising and has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Stimulates tissue repair and tones loose tissues.
  • lavender flowers – Fragrance helps relieve tension and stress. Lavender also has antibacterial properties, which can help fight off infections, relieve itching and pain, speed wound healing, and reduce swelling.
  • plantain leaves – A gentle demulcent that soothes inflammation, fights infections, and soothes inflamed tissues, soothes pain, burning, and itching, and stimulates collagen to speed wound healing.
  • red raspberry leaves – Tightens loose tissues and reduces inflammation. It is also very rich in many nutrients.
  • yarrow flower – Relieve inflammation, pain and swelling. It stops excessive bleeding, speeds wound healing, helps regulate blood flow, and is especially used for hemorrhoids.
  • calendula flower – Soothes inflamed tissues and has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. Soothes cuts, bruises, and scrapes. It has an astringent effect and helps with hemorrhoids as a blood decongestant.
  • Nazuna wallet – Helps reduce bruising and heavy bleeding. It is used for wound healing and has anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Uva ursi leaves – An astringent used for infections and inflammation of the lower urinary tract. It has antibacterial properties and helps prevent urinary tract infections.

  • Mix herbs in a glass container or silicone bag. I used a large mason jar. The proportions do not have to be exact.

  • Add 1 cup of herbs to 2 quarts of boiling water.

  • Remove the water from the heat and let stand, covered, for 20 minutes.

  • Strain and add to your sitz bath and soak for 20 minutes. Both mother and baby can soak in the bathtub to speed up the healing of the umbilical cord and perineum.

This blend can be used in a small sitz bath or bathtub. If using a small sitz bath container, use 1/2 cup of herbs and 1 quart of water.

Other uses:

  • Brew at the above ratio and put it in a peri bottle to use after going to the bathroom.
  • Pour a pre-prepared herbal mix onto the pad and freeze it to create an ice pack for pain relief.
  • Use the diluted mixture around the baby’s umbilical cord stump for healing.
